Stephen Morris is a drummer, composer, and educator from Southern California, recently graduating with a BM in jazz studies: drum set from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York in May of 2017. Prior to Eastman, Stephen studied drum set and jazz at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, California, and graduated Magna Cum Laud in May of 2014 with an Associate’s Degree in Fine and Applied Arts. Stephen was a member of the Disneyland All-American College Band in summer 2014 led by Dr. Ron McCurdy, and also a participant in the Banff Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music during August of 2015 (directed by jazz pianist Vijay Iyer). Stephen has performed and/or worked with John Clayton, Jiggs Whigham, Wayne Bergeron, Ron Carter, Rex Richardson, Sal Lazano, Linda Oh, Imani Uzuri, and Ingrid Jensen, among others. While being an avid performer in Rochester, Stephen has also participated in music outreach programs at Riker’s Island prison in New York, and has taken part in an arts residency program in Northwestern China in the summer of 2016. Stephen is also a winner in the Yamaha Young Artists Program’s 2017 drum set division. Current and former teachers and mentors include Rich Thompson, Jeff Hamilton, Mark Ferber, and Paul Johnson.
